CASE STUDY

Solo SaaS Founder Reaches $500K ARR Using Instagram Outbound

Daniel Park, solo technical founder of a project management SaaS for design agencies

STARTING POINT

$12K MRR, 38 customers, 18 months in, had plateaued despite product improvements and LinkedIn outbound

END POINT

$42K MRR ($504K ARR), 310 customers, bootstrapped, still solo (hired first sales person at $40K MRR)

Timeline: 14 months

The Challenge

Daniel's product was technically solid but growth via LinkedIn stopped working around $10K MRR. His ICP (founders and ops leaders at small design agencies) got 20+ LinkedIn pitches per day and ignored almost all of them. Instagram seemed unlikely for B2B until he noticed his target personas were actually active there.

The Approach

Month 1: ICP mapping on Instagram

Identified Instagram targeting signals for design agency founders: follow design tool accounts (Figma, Adobe), engage with design community hashtags, post their own design work or team content. Built initial list of 2,000 target accounts via Viari.

Months 2-4: message iteration

Tested 7 different DM approaches over 3 months. Winner: referenced something specific from their recent post, positioned Daniel as a peer founder ('Fellow founder here'), asked a qualifying question about their current agency ops tooling. 12% reply rate — lower than B2C but high for B2B.

Months 5-10: pipeline scaling

Scaled to 40 DMs/day from his personal account (founder-account always outperforms brand accounts for B2B). Average sales cycle: 21 days from DM to closed deal at $99-399/mo ACV. Added one additional account (cofounder he added as advisor) to double outreach volume.

Months 11-14: compounding

Customer base grew to point where referrals started contributing. Instagram outbound was now 60% of new MRR, referrals 25%, LinkedIn 15%. Hit $500K ARR in month 14 while still solo until hiring first sales person in month 13.

The Numbers

DMs sent: ~22,000
Replies: ~2,700 (12% reply rate)
Demos booked: ~540
Customers closed: ~270 new + retention
New MRR added: $30K
Average deal: $180/mo ACV

Lessons

  • B2B on Instagram works because competition is low, not because reply rates are high. 12% reply rate is plenty when volume is reasonable.
  • Founder personal account outperforms company brand account by 3-4x on reply rate.
  • The 'fellow founder' angle matters — positions the DM as peer-to-peer, not vendor-to-prospect.
  • Sales cycle is longer than B2C (3+ weeks) but deal values are higher. Math still works out favorably.
Founder identity protected. Figures approximated from Stripe data shared with us. SaaS outbound results correlate heavily with ICP fit — this worked because design agencies happen to be active on Instagram. B2B industries less present on Instagram would see worse results.
